The Wind Bus Bar - foundation for the further development of onshore and offshore wind power
In its transmission grid area, 50Hertz Transmission GmbH has constructed a high voltage overhead line between Schwerin (substation Görries) and Geesthacht (substation Krümmel) near Hamburg. The final construction and connection works were performed on the line section in Schleswig-Holstein. The 380 kV overhead line was commissioned in 2012.
The so-called Wind Bus Bar is required to transport electricity, wind power for the most part, from the low-consumption coastal region to more inland regions consuming more electricity (especially Hamburg). With its construction, 50Hertz enables the further development of onshore and offshore wind power.
Other renewable sources of energy, however, will also benefit from the increased grid capacity. This includes biomass, which in North Germany already plays a more than average role in the generation of electricity. Furthermore, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the Wind Bus Bar will substantially improve the 380 kV infrastructure. By connecting the 380/110 kV transformer substation of Görries over two independent overhead lines, the security of supply is improved for the entire west side of the Bundesland - more in particular for the state capital, Schwerin.
Moreover, the Wind Bus Bar establishes a link between the two regions with the highest generation of wind power in the drainage basins of the North and Baltic Sea. The electricity generation capacity of the wind turbines in this region is expected to rise exponentially in the years to come. 50Hertz is laying the groundwork for this infrastructure: when completed, 50Hertz Transmission GmbH will have invested about 93 million EUR in the new connection, having a length of some 88 km.
