50Hertz counts more than thousand people who ensure that the electricity flows from the producers to the local and regional distribution grids or large industrial customers. Energy transition, grid extension and security of supply require high effort and investment of all 50Hertz employees every day.Being one of four transmission system operators in Germany, 50Hertz is responsible for the transmission of electricity at the highest voltage level, on which grid stability and security of supply in Germany and Europe depends.More than 10,200 kilometres of lines are directly operated by 50Hertz.About 18 million people live in the 50Hertz grid area which covers the Eastern German federal states, Berlin and Hamburg. Nevertheless, our responsibility extends beyond these borders: as a transmission system operator, we are part of a European interconnected grid and collaborate with partners across Europe.
50Hertz: for a successful energy transition - in a sustainable world
It goes without saying that transparency and reliability are absolutely critical factors for success in fulfilling a task that has such a direct and diverse impact on society and environment. 50Hertz decided against a complex certification by an expensive service provider. We rather promote three non-commercial distinctions: Kununu, Fair Company and Absolventa. For all three the vote of 50Hertz employees, trainees and interns is decisive.

The 50Hertz grid is unique in one particular regard: the infeed of electricity from renewable energy sources, mainly from wind turbines, reaches peak values that are the highest in the world. In 2017, the share of renewable energies in power consumption was 53.4 per cent. Why is it special to have a very high share of renewable energy in a power grid? Because renewable energy is volatile and its use cannot be reliably planned due to natural causes. This represents a huge challenge with regards to controlling the grid as its stability depends on the balance between the electricity input and output according to physical laws.
Transmission system operators have a key responsibility in making the energy transition successful. The frequency of the alternating current transported shows how close we are to the exact balance. We have therefore made the target frequency of 50 hertz our trademark. The live frequency displayed on this page shows you how well we maintain the balance.
The frequency shows how well the balance between input and output of electricity is maintained within the entire European grid: at 50Hertz, the balance is perfect.
Digitisation of the energy transition can deliver important answers to this challenge. Systematisation of data supply at the producers, continuous further development of forecast tools on a big data scale as well as company-wide data and business process integration have been occupying us for some time. We are currently introducing smart meters to measure the fluctuations on the consumer side. The development of algorithms to process the generated data will bring us another step closer to further integration of renewable energy sources.
The high share of volatile energy production in the 50Hertz grid area makes 50Hertz a kind of ‘energy transition lab’ and, thus, one of the much-noticed protagonists in the technical development of transmission grids and a respected partner in designing future energy markets.
