Incentives for the regions

In total, 50Hertz Transmission GmbH will invest about 470 million EUR in the three line construction projects: some 93 million EUR are reserved for the construction of the Wind Bus Bar, approximately 248 million EUR for the South-West Interconnector and approximately 130 million EUR are invested in the Uckermark line. We involve local companies in our projects to create important incentives for the development of the region.

10 to 15 per cent of the invested sum can directly benefit the regions. Contracts for earthworks and foundation works, forestry works, activities in landscaping, tunnelling and hydraulic engineering as well as other works are granted to local companies. In the scope of the plan approval procedure, the competent authorities of each Bundesland have determined compensation measures for environmental effects that cannot be avoided. The costs are borne by the project developer, 50Hertz. Regional companies are also involved in the realisation of these measures. Furthermore, young scientists are given the opportunity to develop and contribute new creative ideas to the project, e.g. for more ecological forest aisle management.

New economic perspectives from renewable energy sources

The north-eastern Bundesländer especially are evolving into "renewable energy states", with positive effects on the economic development in these regions. Other forms of renewable energy, however, are also winning ground: by 2020 the share of biomass in energy generation, for instance, should increase more than fourfold within the 50Hertz grid area.

Wind energy

With an installed capacity of 25,400 megawatt in late 2009, Germany is in pole position for wind power in Europe. For the 50Hertz control area alone, forecasts predict a doubling of installed wind power capacity of 13,000 megawatt (MW) in 2010 to approx. 25,000 MW in 2019.
