The Transmission System Operators are responsible for frequency stability in the grid. The frequency remains at the mains frequency of 50 Hz if the power generated matches exactly to the power consumed. However, unforeseen consumption behaviour can cause the power drawn from the grid to vary. For example, when many people switch on their electrical appliances at the same time or an industrial plant suddenly needs high power. There can also be fluctuations on the producer side, for example due to weather deviations from the forecast, which influence the power fed into the grid from renewable energies such as wind and solar power.
The balancing reserve is a mechanism that compensates for deviations from the grid frequency. Similar to trading on the electricity exchange, the balancing reserve products are also procured on a marketplace, whereby the cheapest providers are always awarded or activated first, in order to keep costs as low as possible.
Here, revenue opportunities of the balancing reserve market are compared with the cost side in order to estimate when it may be worthwhile to participate in the balancing reserve market.
Under Technical Requirements for Balancing Service Providers there is an overview of the prequalification process.
Under Balancing Reserve Types in Detail further information on the products is listed.
International cooperations aim to reduce the costs of balancing reserves and create a unified European market.
For further information, there is regelleistung.net, an information portal and data hub of the four German transmission system operators. All the necessary information is provided there, from news from the area of balancing reserve to technical IT requirements.
