Future. Digital: system control of tomorrow

The energy world of tomorrow is one with hardly any conventional fossil fuel power plants. For the grid area of 50Hertz, this represents the challenge to keep the electrical system secure and stable at all times, even without central suppliers and with the aid of state-of-the-art technology. Today, the company is already a pioneer in uninterrupted power supply, even with a lot of the energy in the system is based on renewable sources.

Complex digital technology may not transport electricity, but it does play an increasingly supporting role in exploiting all potentials within a flexible grid with ever greater loads. When establishing generation, consumption and load forecasts for the grids and operating facilities, 50Hertz will make greater use of artificial intelligence in the future.

Flavia Wiese

Project Leader of weather-dependent
overhead line operation at 50Hertz

„With state-of-the-art technology, we render our grid future-proof. Digital tools help us to make the system more flexible and able to handle greater loads. As such, we can transport more renewable electricity through the existing lines than before.“

Flavia Wiese

In order to manage the secure integration of 100% renewable energy, 50Hertz will rely on a new modular network control system in the future. With this cutting-edge Modular Control Center System, 50Hertz ensures that generation and consumption are always balanced, so that the system remains stable 24/7, largely without feed-in from central power plants.

Mirko Pracht

Head of the Process and Tool Management department at 50Hertz

„Our new 50Hertz network control system will help our system management and regional centre colleagues to operate the electrical system efficiently and securely, even with 100% renewable energy, from control to maintenance.“

Mirko Pracht

Grid load in the 50Hertz grid

The 50Hertz grid is constantly being optimised and expanded whenever it is necessary on grounds of renewables’ intergration. Notwithstanding, it is subject to different loads depending on the grid situation. We display the current grid load in the grid area in real time on our interactive grid load map.
