Home/Transparency/Grid Data/Grid figures/Total load

Total load

The total volume of the energy fed into the transmission system of the grid area at a certain point in time is called the total load (or grid area load). It contains both the capacity of all power plants directly connected to our transmission system as well as the feed-in from renewable generation at downstream grid levels such as the distribution grids.

Vertical grid load, total load and grid load

The vertical grid load is the sum, positive or negative, of all power transferred from the transmission grid to distribution grids and final consumers through directly connected transformers and power lines.

The total load (also called grid area load) is the sum of actual generation output in the 50Hertz grid area and the actually performed power exchange across the grid area borders.

The term grid load describes the concrete physical load on individual lines or grid Elements.

Forecast of total load for the next day

The forecast of the total load applies to the next day and is calculated from the known total load.

Below, an overview of the forecasted total load is available for download for the years 2010 to 2014 in Excel 97 format.
Values as of 2015 you will find at the ‘transparency platform’ of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) at: https://transparency.entsoe.eu/

Actual total load

The total load is the calculated total consumer load of the grid area.
This is a calculated value that only contains available or known data.
The total load is calculated as the sum of actual generation output in the 50Hertz grid area and the actually performed power exchange with neighbouring transmission grids across the grid area borders.
