Future. Thoughtful: sector coupling

Sector coupling is entering a decisive phase. Electricity will not just be consumed directly in the future and will be used for electromobility and heat pumps, but also as Power-to-X for urban heating and industrial processes. Hydrogen is another energy source that has appeared on the scene that will be solely extracted from renewable energy sources in the medium and long term. This requires infrastructures that can be expanded efficiently together with the system operators.

Dr. Christiane Golling

Project Leader of corporate development at 50Hertz

„The combination of hydrogen and secure and high-capacity power grids will also evolve towards a decisive locational advantage for companies to settle in a certain location.“

Power-to-Heat cooperation and regulatory sandboxes

Under the slogan “Using instead of curtailing”, 50Hertz participates in the construction of Power-to-Heat units, for instance in Hamburg, Parchim, Rostock, Stralsund and Neubrandenburg. Furthermore, we are a partner of regulatory sandboxes, for instance in Leuna and Spremberg.

Overview of the Power-to-Heat projects and regulatory sandboxes in cooperation with 50Hertz.

Power-to-X

Power-to-X describes all methods that convert eco-power / green electricity into chemical energy sources for electricity storage, into electricity-based fuels for mobility or raw materials for the chemical industry. For instance, hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles, but also kerosene for aeroplanes can be manufactured in a climate-friendly manner by means of Power-to-X. “Power” refers to occasional electricity surpluses that exceed the demand, and “X” stands for the form of energy or the intended purpose.
