Sustainability and Human Rights

Our sustainability strategy is based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For us as a Transmission System Operator (TSO), the SDGs lead to five dimensions we focus on: Climate Action, Environment & Circular Economy, Health and Safety, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as well as Governance, Ethics and Compliance. They build the link between our global objectives and the internal company perspective.

With our sustainability programme "Act Now" we operationalize our sustainable strategy along these five dimensions. They give concrete guidance to ensure the right implementation focus within our everyday processes and activities. Because, as a TSO, we are an important catalyst for the energy transition, we strongly believe sustainability must be embedded in all our activities.

We are enabling a successful energy transition for a sustainable world – this is our vision.

50Hertz, as a transmission system operator, is aware of its social responsibility regarding this demanding and inter-generational collaborative project. In its own Corporate Charter, 50Hertz has undertaken to act in accordance with the ten principles of the UN Global Compact in the areas of working norms, occupational safety, environmental protection, human rights and combating corruption.

Engaging is an open dialogue with all our stakeholders as an integral part of our communication. We are involved in numerous cultural, sports as well as nature and species conservation projects in the grid area and support social initiatives in partnership. In doing so, the well-being and promotion of children and young people lies close to our heart. We also cooperate closely with partners from business and science as well as NGOs.

Responsible corporate management and a vision led by social interests – this is what distinguishes 50Hertz. Motivated by the vision of a successful energy transition – for a sustainable world, we have set ourselves strategic objectives: We want to make grids ready for increasing the shares of renewable energies, maintain the level of security of supply and, in doing so, achieve a competitive result. At the same time, we have to focus even more on occupational safety, increase the efficiency of our activities and continue to promote a value-based corporate culture.

Transparency

Since the 2016 reporting year we have prepared a sustainability report. In 2017, we published a combined annual report covering the key business activities as well as all dimensions of sustainability and our key areas of action. We follow the framework of the Deutschen Nachhaltigkeitskodex (DNK; German Sustainability Code) and the Global Reporting Initiative GRI for this purpose. We joined theUN Global Compact in April 2017 and are increasingly involved in the German network. For several years, we have been exploring our impact on human rights due diligence issues and have developed a policy statement. What a sustainably successful business operation means for us is reflected in our sustainability principles.
