About 50Hertz

50Hertz operates the electricity transmission system in the north and east of Germany, which it expands to accommodate the needs of the energy transition. Our high voltage grid covers a length of more than 10.000 kilometres, or the distance between Berlin and Rio de Janeiro. The 50Hertz control area covers Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, as well as the city states of Berlin and Hamburg. Within these regions, 50Hertz and its more than 2.100 employees ensure that 18 million people are supplied with electricity around the clock. 50Hertz is a forerunner in the field of secure integration of renewable energy. In our grid area, we want to integrate 100 percent renewable energies securely into the grid and system by 2032 - calculated over the year. In this way, we supply affordable energy for a strong economy. The shareholders of 50Hertz are the Belgian holding Elia Group (80%), which is listed on the stock exchange, and the KfW bank group with 20%. As a European TSO, 50Hertz is a member of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E).

About MCCS

MCCS (Modular Control Center System) is 50Hertz’ modular, platform‑based control‑center solution for a secure and flexible power system operation. It is designed to support transmission system operators in managing the growing complexity of modern electricity grids driven by decentralization, renewable integration and increasing dynamics.

MCCS consolidates and modernizes core system‑operation capabilities traditionally covered by control‑center environments—such as monitoring, control, analysis, scheduling, and automation—while enabling advanced, data‑driven functionalities including dynamic system analysis, voltage management, automated topology optimization, and online analytics. This supports resilient and forward‑looking grid operation under rapidly changing conditions.

A key characteristic of MCCS is its modular architecture. Instead of relying on monolithic, tightly coupled applications, MCCS is built from loosely coupled modules that interact through event‑ and data‑driven mechanisms. This  architectural approach enables flexibility, scalability, and the independent evolution of individual components.

Modules can be developed, deployed, upgraded, or replaced independently, reducing integration complexity and  allowing system operators to adapt their solution landscape incrementally and safely over time. Further information on MCCS can be found here: https://www.mccs.com/

MCCS is shared by 50Hertz as a reference architecture and solution approach with peers, particularly other transmission system operators. Through collaboration within the MCCS community, common challenges can be addressed jointly, standards can be aligned and innovation can be accelerated.

In this role, MCCS serves as a blueprint for modern system‑operation platforms, supporting the transition towards a more flexible, resilient and data‑driven infrastructure management.

About the OT/IT-Gateway

The OT/IT Gateway (Operational Technology/ Information Technology) describes a core component in the reference architecture of MCCS. As shown in Figure 1, the Gateway acts as central communication component for messages coming from the field into the MCCS architecture and must also be able to securely support the communication of e.g. control commands from the MCCS architecture into the field. The Gateway is thus an intermediary between the field protocol-based communication and modern IT protocols (Kafka communication).

Towards the field, the Gateway should support different standards. Towards MCCS, the Gateway must be able to communicate as a Kafka producer and consumer with a configurable schema. Additionally, the gateway should provide signal processing capabilities. The Gateway should provide the ability to control, monitor and trace the communication. It should be flexibly scalable to account for changing communication throughputs and it must support security best practices to account for the criticality of the use cases. An additional feature of the OT/IT Gateway is, that it should ideally be configurable in terms its internal data models. The data models are supposed to be provided by the central MCCS master data system e.g. via a Kafka interface.
