Jessen, 23.08.2018 - After eleven months of construction, the compactLine is now transporting electricity. The compactLine is a newly designed system consisting of masts and rope suspensions that is much more compact than a conventional extra-high voltage overhead line. Under the leadership of 50Hertz, the compactLine was developed by a research consortium since 2013 and has been implemented by SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa as a pilot line in Jessen in Saxony-Anhalt (Wittenberg district) on behalf of 50Hertz over a length of approx. two kilometers since September 2017.
With a route width of 55 metres and a mast height of 32 metres, the compactLine takes up considerably less space than the "Danube" series normally used which requires a route width of 72 metres and is at least 52 metres high.
"With the compactLine we have shown that it is possible to build smaller overhead lines without compromising important functional areas. This is an innovation that also makes us a little proud," says Dr. Frank Golletz, Chief Technical Director at 50Hertz.
The project also remains exciting for SPIE: "The special feature of the compactLine is that it fits better into the landscape - because it is lower and more compact than conventional overhead line systems. The key to reducing the mast height and the route width is the significant reduction of the rope slope," explains Ralf Schlosser, Head of the Line Construction Business Unit at SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa. "There is no comparable overhead line system in the world."
Already during the construction phase, the compactLine was the destination of numerous interested visitors. After commissioning, a monitoring phase of at least one year begins during which all individual components and the operation of the system are continuously monitored. Once all these tests have been completed and all findings have been evaluated by experts the compactLine innovation could also be used elsewhere.

In 2013 the idea of the compactLine began taking shape: Under the leadership of 50Hertz, five partners contributed know-how for the development of a new type of overhead line: SPIE Germany & Central Europe, RWTH Aachen, RIBE, Forschungsgemeinschaft für elektrische Anlagen und Stromwirtschaft (FGH) and 50Hertz. The project which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is also supported by the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung and LAPP Insulators.
The main challenge in the development of the new overhead line was to achieve higher transmission capacities with comparatively low space requirements for extra-high voltage overhead lines. The aim was therefore to construct a new 380 kV overhead line, which fits into the width of a 220 kV overhead line, while at the same time being lower (32 instead of 55 metres) due to its compact rope suspension by means of steel supporting ropes and still allowing maintenance during operation.
Following conceptual work in 2014, the main mechanical and electrical tests took place the following year. At the same time, the CityAnalytics Institute conducted a study on the acceptance of overhead line design and its variants.
In April 2017, the Saxony-Anhalt state administrative office approved the construction of a compactLine network connection for the Ragow - Förderstedt line to the newly constructed Jessen/Nord substation (commissioned in August 2016).
