Offshore wind farms make an important contribution to increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity generation. In 2026, two grid connections for future offshore wind farms are under construction with the projects Ostwind 3 off the coast of Rügen and OST‑6‑1 off the Darß peninsula.
In addition, 50Hertz is planning the hybrid interconnector “Bornholm Energy Island” together with the Danish transmission system operator Energinet. Once completed in the 2030s, it is intended to feed electricity from future offshore wind farms near Bornholm into the power grids of Denmark and Germany.
With the Ostwind 4 grid connection, the first direct current (DC) project by 50Hertz in the Baltic Sea is also in preparation. 50Hertz is also active in the North Sea: the LanWin3 project is intended to connect an offshore wind farm northwest of Helgoland to the German transmission grid.
