Ostwind 2 is the project to connect the Baltic Sea wind farms Arcadis Ost 1 and Baltic Eagle to the German extra-high voltage transmission grid. Arcadis Ost 1, the wind farm of the Belgian company Parkwind, is located in the cluster Westlich Arkonasee. Baltic Eagle, the project of the Spanish energy company Iberdrola, is located in the cluster Arkonasee. Together, the two wind farms are to generate an output of approximately 725 megawatts (MW). 50Hertz plans to build three submarine cable systems to deliver this power. These 220 kV AC voltage cables can transmit a total of 750 MW of power. The connection to the German extra-high voltage transmission network takes place at the grid connection point in the substation Lubmin (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).
The clusters Arkonasee and Westlich Arkonasee have been designated as special areas of wind power for the construction of wind turbines. Together they cover an area of approx. 106 square kilometres and are located in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (Arkonasee) as well as in the 12-mile zone (Westlich Arkonasee) of the Baltic Sea. To the nearest coast of Ruegen it is about 20 kilometres (Arcadis Ost 1) and 30 kilometres (Baltic Eagle), to Lubmin on Greifswalder Bodden about 90 kilometres.
Permits have already been granted for the Ostwind 2 project for the land route, for the 12 mile zone (12 sm zone) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and for a section of approx. 5 km in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). On 9 March 2015, 50Hertz had the plan approval decision for the Landtrasse and on 10 July 2015 the plan approval decision for the sea route in the 12 mile zone (12 sm zone) of the Ministry of Energy, Infrastructure and Digitization of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the competent licensing authority for these sections, received. The planning approval decision according to the Seeanlagenverordnung for the Seetrasse up to the so-called bundling point in the EEZ was given to 50Hertz by the responsible Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency on August 13, 2015. In October 2020, 50Hertz received the last plan approval for the sea route in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In mid-September 2021, 50Hertz received the last outstanding approval for the Ostwind 2 project. The planning approval concern a 700-metre-long route section in the territorial sea directly in front of the Arcadis Ost 1 platform.
